Highwood Infant School
The project brief required a bridge being built over a rockery as the entrance into a quiet storytelling area of an internal courtyard. We designed and constructed a bridge from green oak and stainless steel and then created a series of instruments that would provide suitably soft and melodious accompaniment to storytelling. For the other ‘noisy’ end of the courtyard, we designed a sound sculpture that became known as the ‘Multi Music Machine’ and which featured a mechanical drum machine made from salvaged washing machine parts, a stringed instrument, two air honkers and a ‘Pots & Pans’ drum kit. So whether it’s time to sit and listen or the moment to make some noise, the school has fun and interactive environments to suit either mood!
